I suffer from a fun liver deficiency condition called Gilbert’s syndrome. This means that at any given time, I have elevated levels of unconjugated bilirubin in my blood. One of the easiest ways to see the physical manifestation of this is in the whites of the eyes turning pale yellow. Gilbert’s syndrome sufferers are also deficient in a couple enzymes which are used in the metabolism of certain drugs, so metabolizing these drugs may take 1/3 longer. The consequence of Gilbert’s syndrome that I enjoy the most is the occasional tiredness that is associated with it. It is a unique kind of tired. It is not the kind of tired that you feel from lack of sleep, nor is it the kind of tired that you feel after strenuous physical exercise. It is an altogether different kind of fatigue that I cannot describe in words.
