On Thom Yorke’s new album there’s a track called Harrowdown Hill, named after the neighborhood where a government scientist and weapons inspector was found dead in the woods shortly after it was discovered that he was the source for a BBC report accusing Blair’s government of fabricating evidence to justify going to war in Iraq. There’s a lyric in the song ‘did I fall or was I pushed?’ alluding to the uncertainty as to whether he committed suicide or was murdered. His wrists were slit but there was no blood. It makes me wonder whether it’s worth being a whistle-blower. Some people might still blow whistles because they wouldn’t mind dying for the cause, but what gets me is that in just a month or two it’s old news and the common people don’t give a damn. I don’t understand how information like what he provided to the BBC reporter would not destroy an administration, but it doesn’t, and shortly after there’s a new story being broadcast by mass media, and the life the whistle-blower sacrificed is forgotten. I don’t think it’s worth it.
