If everyone observed speed limits all of the time, legislation would be passed to increase the limits. I would guess that people travel a speed exceeding limits by 6-10 mph most of the time. Slowing down to comply with limits, even if only having to slow by 6mph, would result in a marked reduction of productivity that could not be ignored. The combined consequences of each person driving according to law all of the time would increase to such a degree the time spent moving from one destination to the next that the current economic/productivity needs of industrialized nations could not be met. Speed limits, as they exist today, are meant to be broken. The choice of this post’s topic probably has something to do with the fact that I received my 2nd instructional driver permit today.
