One of the things that frustrates me a bit is that in spite of the complexities and inexplicable nature of life and the universe, we only have a mere 3 states of matter. Well, there is plasma, but even though it is the most common state of matter in space, it’s very rare on earth and so it usually gets neglected. And so we’re left with 3 states of matter. As a consequence, regardless of how insane our imaginations may be, we are restricted to thinking of objects as being composed of, or in combinations of, these 3 states. 3 states of matter is far too few. Can you imagine doubling the number to 6, and pondering what the other 3 states might be? No, you can’t, and that’s terribly upsetting to me. I love mushrooms.
