The majority of Americans have little or no money put away for retirement. This, coupled with personal debts that complement the national debt, leads me to wonder if, in the near future, an increasing number of senior citizens will have to consider retirement to be unattainable. Retiring will be a long lost social status, a concept suitable for daydreams, full of the seemingly oxymoronic combination of living comfortably without working. I anticipate the elderly will soon be offered a choice: perform menial tasks for minimum wage or lie low and let the gutter consume you. Old folks too weak to take on the work that their careers entailed but too young to die. They compete vigorously with each other when the town parade is getting organized, hoping to be assigned the position of horse shit disposal manager, walking behind the mounted policemen and picking the manure up as it falls.
