Sometimes I walk on sidewalks. I know, I’m a hardcore rule breaker. Anyway, it strikes me that the number of times there’s a car waiting to pull onto the road from a driveway or parking lot entrance, at the same time that I’m about walk across said sections of the sidewalk, is peculiarly high. It’s as if the cars have been waiting for me to approach the parking lot entrances before starting their engines. Getting past these entrances quickly, by bike for example, and thus lessening the chance of encountering a car that wants out, may seem like the solution. However, even though moving faster means you’ll be spending less time on the unattractive sections of the sidewalk, it also means you’ll encounter more unattractive sections within the same time frame. There’s a balance, you see? Knowing a trade off exists is a source of peace of mind for me.
