When you’re being read your Miranda rights, the one stating your right to remain silent has always struck me as a sassy sarcastic way of saying shut up. Of course, I now know that this isn’t the case, but I think it seemed that way to me because I associate rights with freedoms, and it would seem contradictory for silence to be a right. “You have the freedom to be quiet about the atrocity that you witnessed.” “Oh gosh, lucky thing I don’t have to say anything!” or “I sure am glad I don’t have to defend my honor!” On a related note, what kind of dark humor finds sentencing a murderer to 99 years, instead of an even 100, funny? I wonder if there’s any connection to 99 year sentences and not having to pay taxes on sales of items priced at $___.99
